Smitty’s Take: Giants RB Saquon Barkley was as amazing as advertised during his first NFL carry of the preseason, taking that first rush 39 yards down the field. He got jammed up after a few wiggles, then broke free and knifed through a rushing lane for what turned into 39 yards of scampering. He finished with four rushes for 43 yards against the Browns. We have had Barkley on the Bold Predictions for months as a likely 1.01 in all drafts come 2019. That will seem less bold with each day we near 2019, and to many, that will not seem bold at all anymore. We’re use to that. As for the rest of the fantasy players in this contest, Tyrod Taylor proved that he is in fact underrated as the Browns top passer. We have been suggesting this for a bit now, and it’s nice to see Taylor looking efficient. Taylor was a perfect 5-for-5 for 99 yards and 1TD in Thursday’s week 1 preseason game against the Giants. It’s always a good idea to not let the preseason influence too much of one’s thinking, but sometimes strong play can help reaffirm some things. David Njoku, the Browns on-the-rise TE, caught two passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He has some breakout potential, no question about it. Baker Mayfield looking solid finishing 11-for-20 for 212 yards and 2TDs. Nick Chubb ran a big 15 times, but gained a hugely-disappointing 11 yards on those 15 carries. Rashard Higgins was impressive as he battles for targets this season; he pulled in 4 receptions for 66 yards. Jarvis Landry looked in tune with Tyrod Taylor and pulled in 2 passes for 36 yards. Antonio Callaway, who is potentially looking at an NFL suspension for being cited with marijuana, pulled in 3 passes for 87 yards and 1TD. He is a talented receiver, but he is a risk right now given his inability to stay out of trouble when off the field. On the Giants side of the football, Eli Manning was 4-for-7 for 26 yards, Davis Webb was 9/22 for 70 yards passing, and Wayne Gallman was the only receiver of note, through three quarters, as he pulled in 4 receptions for 33 yards (while rushing 3 times for 5 yards). Giants RB Jalen Simmons ran the ball 7 times for 38 yards and 1TD.
