My Name Is The Dude: I Confess, I Am A Terrible Drafter...

Out of curiosity, I did a walk through time on my main cookie dynasty league. I was curious to find out how my 1st round draft picks had faired over time...

Wow. I suck.

For Reference:
1QB 4pt, full PPR, 12 teams, Start 1-3 RB/WR/TE
Startup was 2013
Record: 4 losses in Semi Finals & 3 missed playoffs

Current Team:
QB: Dak
RB: CMC, Cook, Cohen, Darrel Williams
WR: THill, Golladay, Thielen, Gallup, AJG, McLaurin, Deebo, Kirk, Preston Williams, HButler
TE: Hooper, Hockenson

The Drafts:
2020 - 2.10, 3.10

2019 - Draft:Hockenson (1.07), Deebo (1.07) Lost in Semi Finals
2018 - Draft: Anthony Miller (2.05) , Ian Thomas (3.11) Lost in Semi Finals
2017 - Draft: Corey Davis (1.01), Dalvin Cook (1.05) Lost in Semi Finals
2016 - Draft: Michael Thomas (1.06), Tajae Sharpe (2.06), Pharoah Cooper (3.06) Missed Playoffs

Note: I traded DCook away for CMC, traded MThomas for DCook. Tons of other trades - mostly good, some not
The only players on my current roster from drafts: Hockenson & Deebo

I don't think your drafts are terrible at all. Some players are still developing. Need three years AT LEAST. I like Hock, Deebo, Miller, Thomas. MT I would have kept. But CMC is elite.

WR—MThomas, Diggs, Chark, Harry, Hardman, Perriman, Butler
    TE—Doyle, Jonnu, Thomas

RB—Conner, David & Duke Johnson, Cohen, Howard, Breida, Burkhead, JSamuels, Edmonds

    LOL.

My drafting record isn't so hot in this league. Facts are facts. My trading ability is pretty damn good. I have been successful at trading my picks away and obtaining 1) better picks and then trading away for better players. Thus, the team you see.

Now, if I could just find some luck come playoff time!!!!

I was getting rookie fever yesterday. No picks this year so I started dreaming up trades. Something made me flip through the last 10 years of rookie draft results for my league. Got over rookie fever quickly and came back to my senses. Some years the entire 1st round was a joke. I've had a few great drafts and some terrible ones. Something was wrong with me in 2013. My draft picks were Christine Michael, Kenbrell Thompkins, EJ Manuel, Zac Sudfeld. I can't believe I just told everyone.

Those drafts are overall kind of rough. D Cook saved his career last season. Otherwise this would be worse. Maybe stop doing what you normally do and see how that goes. Anyone is capable of having a bad draft

one league I looked back at my rookie drafting. This is not rookie only draft. Keepers began in 2013. rookies drafted anytime.

2010 CJ Spiller. bum lol. Rob Gronkowski.
2011 Mark Ingram. Antonio Brown was 2010 rookie, I was able to get him in 2011 16 round. Got him again in 2012. Frustrated and refused to draft him 2013, what a mistake.
2012 RG3. David Wilson. Kendall Wright. my worst draft.
2013. Eddie Lacy. DeAndre Hopkins. Le'veon Bell. Kenny Stills. Robert Woods. Christine Michael.
2014 & 2015 I took a two year absent due to league changes I did not agree with. I screwed a tank of a team. Poor choice by me after drafting so well in 2013.
2016. Derrick Henry. Michael Thomas. Kenneth Dixon. Dak Prescott.
2017. Corey Davis (the only league I drafted him due to Christian being long gone ) Alvin Kamara. Joe Mixon. George Kittle.
2018. Royce Freeman. Patrick Mahomes. James Washington.
2019. Dk Metcalf. David Montgomery. TJ Hockenson

Yeah, I think if we were all honest, this is how it goes. When the NFL whiffs on 1st rounders 50% of the team how can we expect to be any better selecting their whiffs.

I was just surprised looking back to see how few drafted players were actually on my team. Trades and waivers built this team which should be very competitive.

I have been saying this for a long time. Most of the rookies in this draft won’t amount to anything. If you’re lucky you might get a guy you can use for a good 2- 3 yrs, obviously if you’re really lucky you will hit on a McCaffery or Julio Jones or Zeke. But you have to realize those guys are who they are cuz they are the outliers. After whiffing on 75% of our draft picks yr after yr you start to realize why NFL careers average only 3 yrs in the league. So many times I play the “whatever happened to that guy” game and you see these names that seemed like such a sure thing and you realize “holy crap that guy was drafted a long time ago”. There’s really only like 10-15 players you can bank on (half of them are QBs, the only guys who have some semblance of employment certainty). That’s what makes those guys special. Everyone else can be easily replaced and oftentimes frequently are replaced. I believe in this particular draft but I know for 2021 I’m willing to trade my 2021 first round rookie pick if it’ll help land me a sure thing stud I can use this yr.

Those weren’t his picks, but rather the top 3 each year in his dynasty league (and you are right...they drafted well)

Troy said it best. The sooner you realize that as a dynasty owner, the more you can take advantage of the information.

Using the start up of The "U" SleeperU dynasty league.

2016: Traded out (No picks in 1-3)

2019: D. Henderson (No other picks until the 5th)
2020: CEH, J. Taylor, C. Lamb, D. Swift, J. Jefferson, J. Reagor, AJ Dillon (We'll see how this pans out....)
