Do you take a chance on Joe Mixon? RE: Latest Allegation

First I read this...

(Rotoworld) Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon allegedly punched a female while in high school.

Analysis: The allegation comes from a man named Anthony Hernandez, who says for a "fact" that Mixon hit his daughter when the two were in high school. "He threw my daughter to the ground and hit her," Hernandez said. "I went to the school and they hid him in the office. He got no punishment. The police even came. I was escorted off the campus as if I did something wrong. These are simply the facts, he's a woman beater." Longtime personnel man Gil Brandt said this incident is of concern among NFL teams as well, in addition to the video of Mixon laying out a girl with a punch while at Oklahoma. Mixon could be drafted anywhere from Day 2 to being an UDFA.

Shortly followed by this...

(Rotoworld) Anthony Hernandez, the father of a female high school classmate of Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon's, has recanted his allegation that Mixon hit Hernandez's daughter.

Analysis: A story recently bubbled to the surface where Hernandez said he knew "for a fact" that Mixon "threw" his daughter to the ground when the two were in high school together. Hernandez has now changed his course. "I have recently learned that a comment I made about Joe Mixon on social media a few years ago is now receiving a lot of attention. I want to explain that comment and clarify that I do not believe Joe ever did anything to hurt my daughter," Hernandez wrote. ... I reacted emotionally. Unfortunately, I did so before I had all the facts. ... I realize that I was mistaken about Joe’s involvement. I definitely overreacted, and I regret that my words might have given some people the wrong impression about Joe. I know that Joe did not hurt my daughter, did not intend to, and would not do so." It sounds like it was brought to light as a potential smear campaign to add on top of the video of Mixon hitting a female while he was at Oklahoma.

I'm not sure what to think now...The 2014 incident in Oklahoma, the more recent incident with a parking lot attendant, and now this potential incident in high school.  No matter how much time and distance he's put between incidents, nor giving the sincerest  of his apologies, will be enough to convince most NFL coaches & GM's to take a chance on Mixon.

So the question to fellow Sleeper U members...Do you take a chance on Mixon if he gets drafted, especially in a favorable RB needy situation (i.e. Panthers, Raiders, Bucs, etc.), and falls to you in your rookie draft or do you take the moral high ground and say "not on my team?"

The panthers absolutely will not, in any way shape or form, draft that guy. Goes against everything they have been building.

Depending on where he lands, I could draft him as high as 1.04

Hes off my board, not because i care about the morals of my players, but because i just dont believe he will have a career in the nfl

If this is new stuff, I'll be monitoring it. I was planning on taking him at 1.5 even knowing it's a bit of a gamble. This is of course not know his landing spot and other top 8 ranked rookies

A man who hits a woman can't just turn it off. That's who they are. He will be in an argument with a woman in the future and sure enough he will hit her.

This ain't the early 70s where everyone in the nfl knew oj was beating his woman and turned a blind eye. If Mixon touches a woman again his career is over.

So at first he knows for a fact that Mixon hit his daughter in a take down, but then was mistaken about his involvement? Dude that sounds like grounds for a lawsuit.

I think Mixon is a punk and could very well get in trouble again, but Mr. Hernandez better get his story straight before saying something like that.
    10-team, non-PPR, start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 FLEX, 1 TE.
2018 keepers: QB Russell Wilson, RB Todd Gurley, RB Ezekiel Elliott, RB Kareem Hunt, RB Dalvin Cook, WR Odell Beckham, WR A.J. Green, WR Keenan Allen, WR Mike Evans, TE Evan Engram

apparently he made the allegations years ago. someone, probably the team that wants to draft him, has now dragged them up seeing the draft is nearing. that's why he has recanted his allegations today. nobody cared about his babbling back in the day because nobody knew who the hell joe mixon was but now, well, it's news.

This is an old story. Mixon is the best RB in this class.

do I draft him, if that team I have can take a complete bust draft pick, he will be out of NFL for good aka Ray Rice if anything close to any of this happens again.  Even knocking over a woman on a dance floor accidentally at a club, alegations will bubble up and he's done for life.

He has talent, and will be one of the most polarizing players this year for sure.  Some NFL team will draft him early I think, and they'll "watch him" just like Dez had a babysitter for 2 years or so following him everywhere, driving him, keeping him out of trouble.  SO many more of these young players should be treated like this.  Official body guard for a few years, 1 to keep them safe, 2 to keep them out of trouble, 3 to protect the teams investment in a 20 year old....  So many players recently could've benfited from this, not sure why the teams don't insist on it all the time

I've thought the same Hawk. With the amount of money that players and teams make I don't understand how any professional athlete gets picked up for impaired driving. Pay me $100k a year and I'll make sure the whole team has access to transportation anywhere they want.

I think Mixon will be fine. But no way in hell would I take him over McCaffrey

Ray Rice was only "out of the league" because he was horrendous the previous year. If owners thought he could still play, he would've had a job.

    See Greg Hardy.

Hardy is out of the league. Jerry jones doesn't count.

Hardy is out now cause he couldn't get to the QB.

Joe Mixon will be one of the best. In a league that values pass catching abilities, he'll be a steal for whoever snags him. All these reports are just teams trying to drive down his value so they can get him later in the draft.

Hes over rated! I dont believe he is "the most gifted runner in this class" as many are saying, i dont even think hes the best rb on his own team.

Because of AP's issue with the hickory switch?

I have no dog in the fight. I'm not a fan of FSU, LSU, OU, etc. I call it like I see it.

    I don't think I can say the same for some others... :) :) :)

You mean Cook in the bottom 10% at the combine? This will be interesting for sure as most have said Mccaffrey has passed him

Reggie bush was picked #2 overall. Doesn't matter where they're drafted.

I hate hearing cook is in the bottom 10% at the combine. He was the 2nd fastes guy on the field in ALL of college football, just behind john ross. Id rather form my opinion of a guy based on his on the field work than what he does wearing compression shorts.

I look at his combine performance a snap shot of his effort and attitude more than his physical traits - yes we go crazy for a 40 or three cone drill, but in reality all these guys know what this is...its their payday. They know its coming and they know its a pony show, but for them to come and lay and egg or for them to some and fail a drug test or freak out on an attendant is just dumb and immature on their part. If Cook is such an athlete shouldn't he be able to walk in and be an "average" athlete without trying? Why bottom 10%? He killed his stock and his payday. And now rumors of him going on Day 2...more question marks than answers

Mixon is talented both on film and from his pro day numbers. That being said, like Kamara he never carried the full load at OU. He obviously has the aggregious incident on record. His combine numbers likely wouldn't have been as good as his pro day numbers. I would put him after cook, fournette, mccaffrey. He's in the tier with Foreman and Kamara. 2-3 rd is where I expect him to go. I'm willing to take him in a fantasy draft, but it depends on where he lands and when he goes in the NFL draft. If he goes 6th rd that shows a lack of trust in him by teams. Then he's a late 2d - early 3d from fantasy. If he goes 2d rd, he's gonna be pushed up in fantasy drafts to early 2d-late 1st
  • redzoneriesredzoneries Posts: 3,340
He was in the bottom 10 percent because his vertical and broad Jump were bad. Those were his lowest measurements. His combine 40 ranked 7th, but his pro day 40 at 4.43 wouldve ranked him 3rd. He finished 4th in bench press. The 5 year average for rbs at the vertical jump is 34.5 inches, cook had 30.5, which is an inch and a half higher than leseab mccoy! 5 year average for broad jump is 119 inches, cook had 116. I dont see these results as condemning, definitly something to consider, but this is the type of performance that should make you want to go back and watch his tape. Once you do that, with his combine in mind, there shouldnt really be any worry.

And i seriously doubt these "rumors" of him being a day 2 guy are serious. Even if he is taken on day two, i dont think it would change my opinion of him. Trent richardson was a day one guy!
