NEWS: Jeff Wilson is likely to get starter-type carries in Week 16 with Raheem Mostert (ankle) out for the season.
FANTASY TAKE: Starting Jeff Wilson in Week 16 comes with some risks, but he also holds a grip of TD upside. The guy was fed 3TDs in Week 7 alone, and he now has back-to-back games with a score. One would be crazy to bank on Wilson getting 15+ carries in Week 16, but he’s a nice bet given Mostert is out of the way. Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon could resurface into the double-digit carry race for the 49ers in Week 16, sure, but this week just feels like Wilson’s week. Just be sure to check back with us all week to ensure Wilson is good to go.
Let’s talk 2021 and Dynasty: Wilson has minimal dynasty appeal, although it’s not crazy to think that he could wiggle his way back into the kind of spot-play he’s been stealing away here in 2020. If on the 49ers roster in 2021, an injury-led path to the line-up is going to be a possibility (especially if the RB room is the same, as it’s full of injury-prone rushers). That said, the 49ers’ running back gig still feels like Mostert’s to lose walking into 2021; however, rookie running backs can land anywhere these days in the NFL Draft given their low draft capital. So, don’t think for a second that the 49ers, or any team, won’t snag a top rusher should they fall to ridiculously-low 3rd- and 4th-round value. No current starter in the NFL is safe from a rookie runner landing on their roster (given how far rookie rushers now fall in the draft).
